Penang and the north.. part 1

We started our journey on 25th September.
As per our previous northern trip, we stopped at the Sg. Buluh overhead bridge lay-by to have our breakfast. Then we continued and stopped by Tapah lay-by for light lunch before making a detour to Taiping for tea. Unfortunately the popiah stall that we wanted to eat at was closed so we ate at a coffee shop opposite. Then we proceeded to Penang and made our way to a friend's apartment located on the 25th floor of Sri Perdana where we would be staying for the duration of our trip.

Start of the trip. Diver and navigator

 View from the 25th floor

Another view. Both taken in the afternoon on arrival day

View from another friend's 23rd floor apartment at Gurney Drive. Taken the next morning before we started our exploration on foot around Georgetown

First stop was at the Heritage Trail site. This is a temple just before the Khoo Kongsi site

A roadside vendor

Another of the many similar temples in the vicintiy

He HAD to spoil the view of the temple above.. hmmm.. but this is the best way to move around in Penang

A bright window

At the edge of a roof

Dragon on a hot roof

Just down the road.. a minaret

Entering the Khoo Kongsi which had some renovations going on within the entrance.

There was this quaint window

A Chinese opera stage directly facing the Kongsi building

The front of the Khoo Kongsi building, which is probably the oldest of similar buildings outside of China

A closer shot of the frontage

The ornate roofing structure

One of the many carved panels inside shielded by a bamboo blind

A mural in one of the chambers

Gilded beams and trusses supporting the roof

Ornate carvings

Closer look at a carving

More details

Colourful wall decoration

Looking up at one of the huge lanterns

Stone slab carving on the wall

I like these bulky wooden gilded carvings

Carved pillar structure

Huge lanterns

More stone carvings

A long corridor at the interior airwell

Detail of a bulkhead carving

Another carving detail

A horde of German tourists arrived..
